Cycle Sport began in 1977 when Mike Altabet set up shop in a back stall of the Orchard Valley Mall in Ashland, Oregon. Mike soon realized that almost no one could find him there, so he moved across the street next to Ashland Creek in the basement of a 100-year-old building affectionately known as "the dungeon". Mike sold the shop in 1979 to Merrill Hayes, a California refugee, who decided to leave his career as a lawyer in Los Angeles to pursue his dream of owning his own bike shop. In 1982 Cycle Sport moved to its present location, the historic Levi house at the corner of Oak & B streets in Ashland's Railroad District. In 1994, Merrill opened a second shop in the fast growing community of Medford, about 12 miles north of Ashland.
In 1992 Bicycling Magazine named Cycle Sport one of the nations top 10 bicycle shops. Bicycle Dealer Showcase, an industry trade publication, has twice named Cycle Sport to it's "Top 100 Dealer" list.
Cycle Sport has always taken pride in the quality of the bicycles we sell. In the 70's we began a relationship with an obscure U.S. framebuilder calling itself Trek. For over 25 years Cycle Sport and Trek have remained faithful to each other through good times and bad, as Trek has grown to become the largest bicycle manufacturer in the U.S. Today, in addition to the Trek line, we feature bicycles from Bianchi, Gary Fisher, Klein, Kona & LeMond. We believe these to be among the finest bicycles in the world.
Merrill Hayes has loved bikes since his first ride at seven years old. He hires people who share his passion for bicycles, for riding, and for helping others to enjoy cycling as much as he does. The Cycle Sport staff consists of men and women who ride recreationally, as well as competitively, all year around. Our mission is to make your cycling experience the best possible. Whether you are new to cycling or a veteran we hope you give us an opportunity to serve you. |
